Read handout titled–Definitions of Democracy.

Be prepared to answer the following questions in a CLASS DISCUSSION:

  1. Define democracy. What are the elements of a democracy? What are examples and non-examples?
  2. During the mid- to late-eighteenth century, were the American colonies democratic? If so, how? If not, why not?
  3. How were the colonies becoming less equal?

Remember–for a CLASS DISCUSSION to be productive, you must:

  • PARTICIPATE,
  • Participation must be meaningful–it is not good enough to say “Yeah, that’s right” or “Good comment”–Your comments must add meaning to the conversation,
  • RESPECT–everyone deserves to have their say and say it in a safe place–no put downs, no laughter, no side conversations, and
  • Listen with an open mind and respond with a respectful attitude.
